Jaw Tension & TMJ Discomfort: What You Should Know

If your jaw clicks, aches, or feels tight, especially after a long day, it could be related to everyday habits. Jaw tension and TMJ (temporomandibular joint) discomfort are more common than many people realize, and they’re often tied to things like posture, stress, or bite alignment.

What Might Be Causing the Tension?

Several factors can contribute to jaw tightness or pain. Unsurprisingly, stress is a big one. Many people clench or grind their teeth when they’re anxious (sometimes without even noticing), which can strain the jaw muscles over time. Poor posture, particularly from looking down at screens, can also shift the alignment of your neck and jaw. And if your teeth don’t come together evenly, that bite imbalance might be adding extra pressure to the joint.

Signs You Might Notice

Aside from the obvious soreness in your jaw, you might hear clicking sounds when you open your mouth, feel tension in your temples or neck, or even have difficulty chewing certain foods. In some cases, people also experience headaches that seem to originate around the jaw area.

What You Can Do

Relaxation techniques, gentle jaw stretches, and being mindful of posture can all help ease strain. Avoid chewing gum for long periods, and try not to rest your chin in your hand when sitting. If symptoms persist or worsen, a dental checkup can help rule out bite-related issues or explore other supportive options (and sometimes just getting a little more sleep can make a difference).
