Teeth Grinding in Rochedale South

Smile with mouthguard

Do you wake up with a tired or sore jaw? Perhaps your partner has heard you grinding your teeth at night, or your dentist has noticed wear that you weren’t aware of. Teeth grinding and clenching, also known as bruxism, can happen during the day or while you’re asleep.

Because nighttime grinding happens without you knowing it, changes to your teeth or morning jaw tension may be the first clues.

Signs You May Be Grinding Your Teeth

Bruxism doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some people clench their jaw without actually grinding their teeth back and forth. Others may notice:

  • Flattened, chipped or worn teeth
  • Jaw or facial muscle tension
  • A tired or sore jaw after waking
  • Headaches, particularly in the morning
  • Tooth sensitivity
  • Damage or wear to existing dental restorations

Stress may play a role for some people, although there can be other factors involved. Rather than assuming grinding is the cause of your symptoms, a dental examination can help determine what’s happening.

Why Teeth Grinding Is Worth Checking

Occasional clenching may not cause noticeable problems. When grinding or clenching happens regularly, however, the repeated pressure can gradually wear tooth surfaces or place additional strain on the jaw and surrounding muscles.

Your dentist can look for signs such as changes in tooth shape, chips, cracks, worn enamel and areas of tenderness. They can also consider whether your bite or other factors may be relevant before recommending what to do next.

Could a Custom Bite Splint Help?

Depending on your individual findings, your dentist may recommend a custom bite splint. This removable appliance is made specifically for your teeth and is generally worn while sleeping.

A splint creates a barrier between the upper and lower teeth, helping protect tooth surfaces from the effects of grinding. It doesn’t necessarily stop the grinding itself, which is why having the cause and extent of your bruxism assessed first is important.

At Dental Health Plus, custom splints are made using measurements of your teeth and bite rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all appliance.

Your dentist may also discuss other strategies depending on what appears to be contributing to your grinding. If another health issue is suspected, referral to an appropriate healthcare practitioner may be recommended.
