Oral Cancer in Rochedale South

Hearing the word cancer is never easy, but knowing the signs and catching them early puts the odds firmly in your favour.

Oral cancer often develops quietly, without pain or obvious symptoms. When it’s picked up early, it tends to respond far better to care than when it’s found later on.

Why a Simple Check Makes Such a Difference

Dental Health Plus includes an oral cancer screening in every routine check and clean, for patients of every age. It only takes a few minutes, and there’s no discomfort involved. During your exam, Dr Vinisha Kapadia (Dentist) and the team will look over your lips, cheeks, tongue, gums and the roof and floor of your mouth for anything unusual, such as red or white patches, sores or lumps. She’ll also feel around your jaw, neck and lymph nodes for swelling and ask about any changes or symptoms you’ve noticed. X-rays can add another layer of insight, helping spot changes deeper in the mouth and jaw that aren’t visible to the naked eye.

Who Should Book In Regularly

Anyone can develop oral cancer, though a few factors raise the odds. You might want to prioritise regular screenings if you:

  • Smoke or used to smoke
  • Drink alcohol regularly
  • Are over 40 (risk also increases for those over 45)
  • Have a history of sun exposure on the lips
  • Have been exposed to HPV
  • Have a personal or family history of oral cancer
  • Have mouth ulcers that won’t go away

Interestingly, close to 27% of people diagnosed with oral cancer have never smoked or had more than the odd drink, so a regular check matters even if none of the usual risk factors applies to you.

If Something Looks Different

Should anything unusual turn up during your visit, you’ll be referred promptly to the right professional for further care. That’s not a maybe; it’s how we work.
